Test Drive 2017 Chevrolet Malibu by Canton Ohio
The tagline of the new, 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is “Expect to Be Impressed.” And it is beyond that. Larger, longer, and yet lighter than ever before, the 2017 Malibu commences the long-running nameplate’s ninth production cycle. There are four trims: L, LS, 1LT, and Premier, which replaces the LTZ from the previous production cycle as the top-level model.
Interior – Schedule Your 2017 Chevy Malibu Test Drive
The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is a four-door midsize sedan that provides 102.9 cubic feet of passenger volume in its cabin. Trunk room is measured at 15.8 cubic feet of cargo volume. On the Premier, the front bucket seats can be heated in colder days. Also exclusive to the Premier is leather wrapping on the steering wheel, which also has heating capability. For comfort and convenience, the Malibu starts off with electronic cruise control, a six-speaker AM/FM stereo system, and a rear seat reminder to double-check for valuables left behind when you turn off your car. Upgrade to the LS to get the addition of a Wi-Fi hotspot for wireless Internet access at 4G LTE speeds; and the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, which comes with a 7-inch color touchscreen and integrates features such as Bluetooth for streaming audio and hands-free phone calls and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for smartphone-based control. A three-month SiriusXM satellite radio subscription is added on the 1LT. And with the Premier, the 7-inch touchscreen is replaced with an 8-inch touchscreen navigation system, remote vehicle start and a color driver information display screen are added, the HVAC system is upgraded with dual-zone automatic climate control, and the entire stereo system is replaced by nine-speaker Bose premium audio.
Exterior – Chevrolet Malibu Dealership Test Drives
On the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu, exterior lighting includes a pair of halogen headlights that automatically turn on and off depending on the amount of outdoor light. Also present are sequences of daytime running lamps (DRLs), which are integrated into the headlights and automatically turn on when the car is moving to increase its conspicuity. On the upper-level 1LT and Premier, the DRLs are LEDs instead of halogen light bulbs; as a result, they will last longer. The side mirrors on the Malibu are power adjustable, and you can manually fold them to prevent potential damage. They can be heated if you go with the 1LT or Premier, so that you can defog them faster if necessary during cold weather. The base-level L is the only trim with steel wheels, which measure 16 inches in diameter; the LS rides on 16-inch alloy wheels, the 1LT has 17-inch ones, and the Premier has 18-inch ones.
Mechanical / Powertrain – Malibu Information
The L, LS, and 1LT trims are powered by the 1.5-liter turbocharged LFV 4-cylinder (I4) engine, which generates 163 horsepower at 5,700 RPM and 184 lb-ft of torque at up to 3,000 RPM. The Premier stands alone with its LTG, a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 that produces 250 horsepower at 5,300 RPM and 260 lb-ft of torque at up to 5,000 RPM. Hitched to each engine is a 6-speed automatic transmission for gear shifting convenience, and the sedan uses a front-wheel drive layout. Large, four-wheel 16-inch disc brakes ensure that the car comes to a stop as quickly as possible, with the wheels free from locking up when the brakes are applied. And a four-wheel independent suspension and speed-sensing power steering promote a smooth and controlled ride every time out.
Safety – Request a Personalized Chevrolet Test Drive
In the event of a car crash, the 2017 Malibu provides protection with a sophisticated 10-airbag system. Two airbags face the driver and front passenger, with another pair of airbags at the knees. Two airbags are installed on the front seats for front impact, and two front and two rear side curtain airbags are mounted on the roof rails for head protection. The front passenger seat comes with a sensor-based occupant sensing classification system to deploy or deactivate the airbags at that section if the person does not meet weight requirements. The braking system is accompanied by ECM grade braking control to help maintain stopping power when driving through hilly areas, and there’s StabiliTrak vehicle stability control with traction control to always keep you in driving control—no matter the road or weather condition. And there’s a three-year subscription to the OnStar Guidance Plan, a robust suite of car services that includes automatic crash response, vehicle diagnostics, and stolen and roadside assistance. You’ll need to upgrade to the LS trim to add a rear vision camera for flashing a video image when you shift to reverse and back out of somewhere or try to parallel park. Also added on the LS and higher is Teen Driver mode, which helps encourage safe driving habits in younger drivers in a number of ways, such as providing an in-vehicle report that monitors frequency of safety tech features activated, muting the audio system when front-seat occupants are not wearing their safety belts, and giving audible and visual warnings when the vehicle is traveling over predetermined speeds.
